  • See Why Neurosurgeon Dr. Norman Shealy, Recommends Posture Pump® For Neck & Low Back Pain

Dr. Norman Shealy is one of the world’s leading experts in pain and depression management. He was the first physician to specialize in the resolution of chronic pain. A pioneer in developing safe and effective treatment, he founded, in 1971, the first comprehensive pain and stress management facility in the country, The Shealy Institute, respected world-wide for its innovative and successful rehabilitation approaches in over 30,000 patients. Over the years, Dr. Shealy’s intensive pain and stress management research has resulted in numerous pioneering treatments. His seminars and workshops are given worldwide, and attended by physicians and lay persons alike. To view Dr. Shealy’s IRB Approved MRI Studies done on Posture Pump, click on the Research & Studies tab.

Having been a successful working neurosurgeon for many years, Dr. Shealy had always been intrigued by any method of spinal repair that didn’t require the aid of surgery. This interest was backed by a previous study he’d conducted that determined 80% of those who had undergone surgery for a ruptured disc, did not, in fact, have a ruptured disc at all. Dr Shealy considers the overwhelming amount of individuals undergoing surgery to be excessive. He believes that individuals should always consider every option available at their personal disposal before committing to risky and costly surgery. Dr. Shealy points out that that using Posture Pump® can be a great relief tool for an aching/sore neck, low back pain, and fatigue because the Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®) behind Posture Pump® is something that individuals can utilize themselves from the comfort of their home. He also recommends giving Posture Pump® a try for one week (at the least) before considering surgery.

“When you know you're going to have to pay hundreds of dollars of deductible by the time you see five different people, I consider Posture Pump® a great bargain for helping pain in the neck or the low back.”

  • What is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®) and how does it relieve neck & back pain?

Neck & back pain is a very common problem among the US population, and has traditionally been treated with the use of drugs. However, there are now therapeutic options like the Posture Pump® Disc Hydrator®, which uses Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®) to ease painful stiffness of the neck and back. But what is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression, and how does it alleviate neck and back pain?

Short term neck and back pain very often resolves on its own. However, chronic pain due to conditions such as sciatica, sciata, disc degeneration, compressed discs and herniated discs, usually require intervention. In these cases, Posture Pump® products provide a unique form of decompression therapy known as EED® for relief of neck & back pain.

What is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®))?

EED® was invented and patented by Posture Pump®.  Under EED®, high level joint separation is achieved by expansion of elliptical shaped air cells into the curves of the spine (neck & back).  As EED® occurs, bulging disc material is drawn toward the nucleus pulposus and away from the spinal cord and nerves.  This unique action aligns joints in a curved shape while increasing disc height in a ratio corresponding to the disc’s natural wedged shape. Expansion and contraction of these air cells create alternating hydration and milking of the discs.  Longer expansion periods are employed for posture restoration. It is no longer necessary to forcefully pry the head from the body, pull the posterior joints apart and remove the vital curves of the neck and back.  These spinal curves are essential.

    Posture Pump MRI

Most healthcare professionals are choosing to treat patients with neck & back pain using EED® via Posture Pump®, because it does not forcefully remove the vital natural curves of the spine. This is not the case with conventional linear traction treatment, which tends to remove the essential spinal curves.  In an IRB approved MRI study conducted by Dr. C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D., neurosurgeon, researcher and author, he found that Posture Pump® Cervical Disc Hydrator® improved the cervical curve in 72% of subjects whereas the commonly used form of linear traction device had only an 8% cervical curve improvement.  In fact, linear traction actually compromised the cervical curve in 83% of subjects.  Dr. Shealy also found that Posture Pump® increased the average disc height twice as much than with the linear traction device.  You can view this and other research studies here.

  • How Tech Neck/Texting Neck Affects Your Spine

woman textingTexting: It’s just a harmless, fun, and fast way to stay in touch with friends and family.  You get so many texts on a daily basis, you hardly think twice when you bend your head over your smartphone, furiously typing your answer back.
But did you know that this seemingly innocuous habit could be one of the biggest causes of your neck and back pain?
According to an article published in Surgical Technology International, the average person juts their head forward between 15 to 60 degrees to read and respond to texts on a phone.  The amount of force exerted on the neck is surprising: if you bend your head down by 15 degrees, you’re putting 27 pounds of pressure on your neck.  At the opposite end of the spectrum, you’re placing a whopping 60 pounds of pressure on your neck if you’re bending your head by sixty degrees.
To put that in perspective, that’s the average weight of an eight-year-old.  And if you’re texting non-stop – well, you might as well just give piggyback rides at the playground.
Think you don’t text much?  Think again: The average American spends about an hour on their smartphones each day.  Whether it’s texting friends or reading an article on the train to work, this constant activity can add up to serious neck and back pain.

So how can you reduce the amount of pressure you exert on your neck?

    • Limit the amount of time you spend on your smartphone. Designate certain times of the day for responding to texts.  Minimize these times as much as possible, as this can help reduce the amount of pressure on your neck.
    • Hold your phone up more toward your face. If you hold it at eye level, you can reduce the amount of pressure on your neck.
    • Strengthen your back and neck muscles. Get 30 minutes of cardio activity each day, followed by light strength training.
