    When dealing with chronic neck or back pain, one can easily develop a dependency on powerful opioids. When the neck and back are compromised, it doesn’t take long for day-to-day activities to also be impacted. The pain may start from the neck, radiating all the way down to the lower back, or may be limited to one area or the other. This prolonged kind of pain can make simple tasks in life feel like an uphill struggle, and can become quite draining. Solutions to relieving neck pain can seem limited, and individuals are often influenced by the "quick fix" promise of painkillers. However, this can often lead to the development of a symbiotic relationship with prescription drugs.

    Characteristics of Addiction

    Addiction is a behavioral and psychological condition that exhibits a strong craving or compulsion to over-attend to one’s desires, thus creating a dependency. Sometimes, individuals don’t realize when they have created an attachment to something, whether that be a controlled substance, an object, or any kind of activity. One can then convince him/herself to view certain behaviors as the norm, accepting and adapting them into their daily routine, potentially discrediting the reality of addiction.

    Here are some common indicators of addiction:

    1. Withholding updates: Limited communication with doctor about medication usage and/or updates of effects
    2. Misusing medication: You find yourself using the medication other than for it's intended use
    3. Creating own directions: Not taking medicine as directed
    4. Escaping life responsibilities: The amount of usage has led to foregoing responsibilities, daily activities, etc.

    Becoming addicted to prescriptions may cloud one's judgment, overshadowing the drug's initial intended use. The actual requirement of the opiate may have already been met, but one's body may be deceivingly saying otherwise due to an increased tolerance. Tolerance is developed from long-term use of a drug, leading to a need for a stronger dosage. This is a mental and physical trigger of the addiction, causing an “I need more” reaction. In truth, reaching this point is more of a warning sign to decrease the habit and possibly find alternative solutions to the pain.

    Conversely, abruptly stopping one's medication can have physical side effects. Withdrawal symptoms occur when use of the drug is reduced or stopped within a short period of time. Withdrawal symptoms from prescription painkillers can include flu-like symptoms, and can last anywhere from 24 hours to upwards of 10 days. The severity and duration of withdrawals varies depending on an individual's  level of dependency on the substance – length of time abusing the drug, amount of use, etc. It's important to be aware of these risks when researching pain relief sources.

    According to the 2016 National Study on Drug Use and Health, the most abused prescription drug falls under painkillers, with 3.3 million users. The U.S. consumes about 80 percent of the world’s prescription drugs. This is indicative of how susceptible many  are to becoming dependent on medications.     Poor Posture Exercises

     

    “Posture is important!” “Sit/stand up straight!” “Shoulders Back!” Do any of these statements sound familiar? You’ve probably heard at least one of them in your life. Like it or not, your posture says a lot about you. It can play a huge role in the way you’re perceived by the outside world. For instance, good posture can denote confidence, vitality, trustworthiness, and professionalism. Conversely, poor posture can often imply low self esteem, lack of respect, and/or self-doubt.

    Have you ever caught a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or window and noticed that, maybe, you weren’t standing as tall as you could be? In that moment, you may make a quick adjustment to your stance and keep walking, but let’s face it: Nobody is acutely aware of their posture 24/7. That’s simply not realistic. it’s worth noting that everyday activities, like constantly looking down at your smartphone, or leaning forward at a computer for a prolonged period, can quickly turn into bad habits that wreak havoc on the neck and back.

    Forward Head Posture, a byproduct of those aforementioned regular activities, doesn’t just create a superficial slumped appearance. This type of forward tilt can cause painful stiffness in the upper/mid/lower back, neck, and shoulders, decreased height, headaches/migraines, and even muscle spasms.

    Technology isn’t going anywhere, so it’s increasingly important to incorporate healthy posture habits into our everyday lives to help “dump the hump.” The good news is, there are a variety of exercises and stretches that can help to not only improve posture, but potentially ease that accompanying pain/stiffness as well!     1. Twisted Crunch: In addition to strengthening posture, this exercise also works your abdominal/oblique muscles.

    How To Do It: While lying with your back flat to the ground and your knees bent, place both hands behind your head. Then, raise your upper body into a crunch position, and begin by rotating your left shoulder to your right. Then, simply repeat this sequence, this time, rotating your right shoulder to your left.

    2. Back Extensions: This exercise helps to strengthen the back, providing a solid foundation for improved posture.

    How To Do It: Lying on your stomach, place both arms either at your sides, or in front of you, keeping one hand on top of the other. Place your chin on top of your hands. Begin by lifting your feet off the floor about 2 inches, while also lifting your upper body as high off the ground as you’re comfortably able. Hold this stretch for a few seconds, then release, and repeat the sequence. Note. It’s important to keep your chin lifted without hyper-extending your neck, or, pushing the neck too far backward.

    3. Shoulder Rolls: This is a simple exercise that eases tension and stiffness from being in a prolonged forward leaning seated position and improves posture.

    How To Do It: Either in a seated or standing position, inhale, then bring your shoulders up towards your ears, rolling them backward and then back down. Repeat this sequence several times. Tip* If you're able, try using hand weights with this exercise to take it to the next level!

    4. Seated Twist: One of the most effective and easy posture exercises.

    How To Do It: In a straight seated position on an exercise ball, extend your arms out in front of you. Then, simply twist to the right, come back to center, and then twist to the left. You’ll know you’re doing this correctly when you feel the stretch in your oblique muscles with each twist. Tip* If you're able, try using hand weights with this exercise to take it to the next level!

    5.   • Golfing and Neck Pain: How To Get Relief

     

    Golf and pain go hand in hand, especially in the neck.
    You need good range of motion in your neck for your golf swing. If you've got a kink in your neck that makes movement panful, your golf swing will of course be impacted!

    One of the biggest contributors to neck pain is poor posture during an activity. Instead of pulling the chin down for a neutral posture, some people keep the chin forward and shoulders slouched. That makes the chin stick out and creates tension in the neck and surrounding muscles.

    In the pursuit of neck pain relief, an important aspect which is often overlooked is unrestricted cervical spine rotation. The ability to "retract" your neck, and fully rotate to the left is necessary to achieve a good "top of back swing position" (for the right-handed golfer). Any limitation in flexibility in either plane of motion can cause muscle strain/or nerve pinching. The shearing and rotational stresses occurring at the lower neck at the top of backswing will be minimized with good muscle flexibility. Gentle rotation and side bending neck stretches done twice daily for a duration of twenty seconds each will help eliminate pain and restriction.

    The most common form of neck pain is often caused by overstretching of ligaments due to postural stresses. The golfer who spends countless hours practicing with the head in a forward, protruded position will always be at higher risk to develop cervical (neck) pain. 

    Extending the neck while you swing causes tension; carrying a golf bag on the same side all the time leads to uneven muscles and pain.

    Quick fix: Bring your chin toward your neck as you look down at the ball so your neck is not extended; alternate shoulder sides when you carry a golf bag.

    Neck Stretch Tips:  Face forward and let your head bend

    slowly to the side.

    • Hold three seconds and repeat on the other side.
    • Repeat 10 times.
    • Do this exercise slowly and gently.
    • For an additional stretch, when your head is bent to the side, let it roll slowly forward about 45 degrees and hold it there for three seconds.

    Remember that using the proper form during physical activity prevents neck pain. So does strengthening the neck, shoulder, back and core muscles.

    Step-By-Step Instructions: Easy to use at home device- just minutes a day for neck AND upper back pain relief, increased flexibility, & range of motion!

    Before you begin, here are some safety precautions:

    • You shouldn't use Posture Pump® without consulting with your Healthcare Professional, as certain joint, nerve, disc, vascular, and other disorders or weaknesses could potentially be aggravated and worsened.
    • Do not use if you have implanted spinal hardware.
    • If you are pregnant, you should not use Posture Pump® beyond your first trimester.
    • Do not use if you are injured.
    • Never inflate to the point of pain.
    • DO NOT cover up or block off open ends of hand pump (Safety Release Valve.)
    • Refrain from re-positioning your body when neck unit is inflated! When using neck unit and back unit together, always apply the back unit first. When all movement with back unit is complete, apply neck unit. Completely deflate neck unit and release head restraint before moving back unit.
    • If pain results during treatment, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
    • If your back is sensitive or extremely stiff, first use the unit on your bed/mattress. As your flexibility increases, you may wish to graduate to a flat, firm surface.
    • An aggressive workout with the Posture Pump® may temporarily cause soreness. If so, reduce the intensity and duration of your treatment.
    • Keep unit out of reach of children at all times.

    WARM UP ROUTINE: Begin by slowly turning the head side-to-side 5 times; then tilting the head forward and backward 5 times; then leaning the neck from side-to-side 5 times.

    INSTRUCTIONS:
    1. After warm-up routine, place deflated unit on a comfortable, firm surface. Deflate air cell(s) by pushing the button on the pump and squeezing air cell(s). With Comfort Visor™ forehead restraint untangled at back of unit, slide and center unit under the back of your neck, snugly against your shoulders and upper back. Note that if you are not snug, comfortable, and centered on the inflated neck bladder or back bladders, or if it seems to inflate unevenly, completely deflate all air cells, remove Comfort Visor®, then re-center yourself on the unit and reapply Comfort Visor™.
    2. Center your neck on neck cradle measuring with your index fingers. 
    3. Apply Comfort Visor™ by centering it across your forehead. While holding it there with fingers, lightly tighten one side at a time until snug and centered. Allow it to slide back toward hairline as you pull all slack out of Comfort Visor™ ends equally while holding frame down with fingers. Comfort Visor™ will mold to the shape of your forehead as it slides back. Re-position until it feels secure and comfortable. Note: For smaller heads and shorter necks, locate Comfort Visor™ in forward slots. For larger size locate Comfort Visor™ in back slots.  
    4. Hold back of unit down with tips of index fingers or thumbs and further tighten Comfort Visor™ if necessary.
    5. Press ends of Comfort Visor™ straps across the Velcro® forehead section. Comfort Visor™ should be as snug as possible without lifting up the back of the unit and may be tightened further after the first repetition. (Back of frame may lift slightly during application on some surfaces. THIS IS NORMAL.) 
    6. Slowly pump unit up to your own comfort level; never to the point of pain. Model 1400-D Dual Disc Hydrator® usually 2 to 12 complete pumps. Pump fewer times during first week of use. (Pump is equipped with automatic air release valve, limiting inflation.) Never cover up or block off open ends of hand pump.
    7. Wait approximately 10 seconds; then release all air by pushing the manual air release button on the pump. Repeat approximately 10 to 15 times.
    8. Next, inflate unit to a comfortable level (never to the point of pain) and relax on inflated unit for 1 to 5 minutes on first session. Gradually work up to a maximum goal of 15 minutes by adding a few minutes to each session or as directed by your Healthcare Professional. Inflate unit at lower levels the first week, thus reducing soreness commonly caused by aggressive usage. 
    9. Completely deflate unit, release Velcro® straps from forehead and remove Comfort Visor™.  Roll off unit to your right or left side slowly and carefully without turning your head. When you are free from the unit and standing or sitting in an upright position, gently and slowly repeat warm-up routine to acclimate your neck muscles to the weight of your head.
    10. Keep unit near bed or night stand and repeat the above treatment as recommended by your Healthcare Professional. Keep unit out of reach of children at all times.

    Do you get neck stiffness or soreness after playing video games for long periods of time? Do you notice yourself leaning forward towards the TV and looking up at the screen?     It might not be immediately obvious from watching e-sports stars in their professional performances, but the life of a pro gamer can actually be quite physically taxing.  E-Sports ergonomics expert Frank Maas tips for improving your physical approach to gaming includes: the correct sitting position, screen height, and taking breaks often with proper stretching and exercises to keep healthy. You don’t need to be a pro gamer to have these neck and back issues.  The everyday gamer can be impacted.

    Gaming Positions:  There are 2 really common gaming positions for gamers. The “couch slouch”, where the gamer is just chilling with feet up on the coffee table and slouched back into the couch. Then, there’s the “full-on” position – usually in the heat of an FPS battle – that involves leaning forward, elbows on knees, head tilted forward, and all attention and focused on the screen.

    Many gamer's play video games using a game chair or on the bean bag. Some have found that using the gaming chair has improved their posture and eliminates the forward head and rounded shoulders position.
