  • Sailing & Back Pain: What You Need to Know

     

    Sailing and racing is enjoyed by countless individuals the world over. It’s a fun, exciting, and adventurous outdoor activity. Many sailors and racers enjoy the sport because it offers a liberating connection to nature and the elements. The constantly changing conditions of the wind and sea, however, can add to the risk of neck and back pain. This is a commonly reported issue, which should come as no surprise, given the immense physical demands involved in sailing.

    Often, the surrounding environment of the sea can be unpredictable. This usually requires vigorous, quick movements during sailing and racing. Many sailing aficionados report not only pain in the neck and/or back, but acute shoulder and arm stiffness as well. When put to action while boating, the sometimes awkward movements and positions involved can contribute to hyper-extension, or locking of the joints.

    Whether sailing or racing, one common cause of back pain is due to over-arching the low back due to a weak core. Additionally, stress put on the spine while sailing using positional, repetitive motions can lead to disc bulging/protrusion. This causes the back (and neck) to lose their proper postural curves over time. As bones clamp down on the discs of the spine, nutrient-rich lubricating fluid is forced out of the disc space. This common occurrence causes bones and joints to dry up, decay, and become painfully stiff.

    Tips For Prevention

    The ever-changing conditions of the sea reinforce the importance of being in good physical condition. This will help to avoid musculoskeletal issues that may lead to bigger health problems down the road. One should practice regular cardiovascular, core, and flexibility training. Taking regular breaks while sailing will also help maintain endurance and stamina on the water. As with any physical exercise (weightlifting, yoga, etc.), developing a habit of practicing proper form and stretching/warming up joints before setting sail is crucial. Finally, if there are any areas of technical skill that need improvement, seek out training/coaching to strengthen these skills beforehand.

    A healthy balance of nutrition and hydration is just as important as physical training while sailing. When navigating the sometimes-erratic settings of the wind and ocean, it’s important to maintain a regular intake of good carbohydrates. Equally as critical is the consistent intake of water. Dehydration when sailing leads to decreased energy and weakend muscle strength. It is recommended to consume 500ml of water or sport drink one half-hour before setting sail. Once on the water, it’s a good idea to drink 150ml every 15 minutes, especially during a vigorous boat race.

    Poor Posture Exercises

     

    “Posture is important!” “Sit/stand up straight!” “Shoulders Back!” Do any of these statements sound familiar? You’ve probably heard at least one of them in your life. Like it or not, your posture says a lot about you. It can play a huge role in the way you’re perceived by the outside world. For instance, good posture can denote confidence, vitality, trustworthiness, and professionalism. Conversely, poor posture can often imply low self esteem, lack of respect, and/or self-doubt.

    Have you ever caught a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or window and noticed that, maybe, you weren’t standing as tall as you could be? In that moment, you may make a quick adjustment to your stance and keep walking, but let’s face it: Nobody is acutely aware of their posture 24/7. That’s simply not realistic. it’s worth noting that everyday activities, like constantly looking down at your smartphone, or leaning forward at a computer for a prolonged period, can quickly turn into bad habits that wreak havoc on the neck and back.

    Forward Head Posture, a byproduct of those aforementioned regular activities, doesn’t just create a superficial slumped appearance. This type of forward tilt can cause painful stiffness in the upper/mid/lower back, neck, and shoulders, decreased height, headaches/migraines, and even muscle spasms.

    Technology isn’t going anywhere, so it’s increasingly important to incorporate healthy posture habits into our everyday lives to help “dump the hump.” The good news is, there are a variety of exercises and stretches that can help to not only improve posture, but potentially ease that accompanying pain/stiffness as well!     1. Twisted Crunch: In addition to strengthening posture, this exercise also works your abdominal/oblique muscles.

    How To Do It: While lying with your back flat to the ground and your knees bent, place both hands behind your head. Then, raise your upper body into a crunch position, and begin by rotating your left shoulder to your right. Then, simply repeat this sequence, this time, rotating your right shoulder to your left.

    2. Back Extensions: This exercise helps to strengthen the back, providing a solid foundation for improved posture.

    How To Do It: Lying on your stomach, place both arms either at your sides, or in front of you, keeping one hand on top of the other. Place your chin on top of your hands. Begin by lifting your feet off the floor about 2 inches, while also lifting your upper body as high off the ground as you’re comfortably able. Hold this stretch for a few seconds, then release, and repeat the sequence. Note. It’s important to keep your chin lifted without hyper-extending your neck, or, pushing the neck too far backward.

    3. Shoulder Rolls: This is a simple exercise that eases tension and stiffness from being in a prolonged forward leaning seated position and improves posture.

    How To Do It: Either in a seated or standing position, inhale, then bring your shoulders up towards your ears, rolling them backward and then back down. Repeat this sequence several times. Tip* If you're able, try using hand weights with this exercise to take it to the next level!

    4. Seated Twist: One of the most effective and easy posture exercises.

    How To Do It: In a straight seated position on an exercise ball, extend your arms out in front of you. Then, simply twist to the right, come back to center, and then twist to the left. You’ll know you’re doing this correctly when you feel the stretch in your oblique muscles with each twist. Tip* If you're able, try using hand weights with this exercise to take it to the next level!

    5.     Step-By-Step Instructions: Easy to use at home device- just minutes a day for neck AND upper back pain relief, increased flexibility, & range of motion!

    Before you begin, here are some safety precautions:

    • You shouldn't use Posture Pump® without consulting with your Healthcare Professional, as certain joint, nerve, disc, vascular, and other disorders or weaknesses could potentially be aggravated and worsened.
    • Do not use if you have implanted spinal hardware.
    • If you are pregnant, you should not use Posture Pump® beyond your first trimester.
    • Do not use if you are injured.
    • Never inflate to the point of pain.
    • DO NOT cover up or block off open ends of hand pump (Safety Release Valve.)
    • Refrain from re-positioning your body when neck unit is inflated! When using neck unit and back unit together, always apply the back unit first. When all movement with back unit is complete, apply neck unit. Completely deflate neck unit and release head restraint before moving back unit.
    • If pain results during treatment, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor.
    • If your back is sensitive or extremely stiff, first use the unit on your bed/mattress. As your flexibility increases, you may wish to graduate to a flat, firm surface.
    • An aggressive workout with the Posture Pump® may temporarily cause soreness. If so, reduce the intensity and duration of your treatment.
    • Keep unit out of reach of children at all times.

    WARM UP ROUTINE: Begin by slowly turning the head side-to-side 5 times; then tilting the head forward and backward 5 times; then leaning the neck from side-to-side 5 times.

    INSTRUCTIONS:
    1. After warm-up routine, place deflated unit on a comfortable, firm surface. Deflate air cell(s) by pushing the button on the pump and squeezing air cell(s). With Comfort Visor™ forehead restraint untangled at back of unit, slide and center unit under the back of your neck, snugly against your shoulders and upper back. Note that if you are not snug, comfortable, and centered on the inflated neck bladder or back bladders, or if it seems to inflate unevenly, completely deflate all air cells, remove Comfort Visor®, then re-center yourself on the unit and reapply Comfort Visor™.
    2. Center your neck on neck cradle measuring with your index fingers. 
    3. Apply Comfort Visor™ by centering it across your forehead. While holding it there with fingers, lightly tighten one side at a time until snug and centered. Allow it to slide back toward hairline as you pull all slack out of Comfort Visor™ ends equally while holding frame down with fingers. Comfort Visor™ will mold to the shape of your forehead as it slides back. Re-position until it feels secure and comfortable. Note: For smaller heads and shorter necks, locate Comfort Visor™ in forward slots. For larger size locate Comfort Visor™ in back slots.  
    4. Hold back of unit down with tips of index fingers or thumbs and further tighten Comfort Visor™ if necessary.
    5. Press ends of Comfort Visor™ straps across the Velcro® forehead section. Comfort Visor™ should be as snug as possible without lifting up the back of the unit and may be tightened further after the first repetition. (Back of frame may lift slightly during application on some surfaces. THIS IS NORMAL.) 
    6. Slowly pump unit up to your own comfort level; never to the point of pain. Model 1400-D Dual Disc Hydrator® usually 2 to 12 complete pumps. Pump fewer times during first week of use. (Pump is equipped with automatic air release valve, limiting inflation.) Never cover up or block off open ends of hand pump.
    7. Wait approximately 10 seconds; then release all air by pushing the manual air release button on the pump. Repeat approximately 10 to 15 times.
    8. Next, inflate unit to a comfortable level (never to the point of pain) and relax on inflated unit for 1 to 5 minutes on first session. Gradually work up to a maximum goal of 15 minutes by adding a few minutes to each session or as directed by your Healthcare Professional. Inflate unit at lower levels the first week, thus reducing soreness commonly caused by aggressive usage. 
    9. Completely deflate unit, release Velcro® straps from forehead and remove Comfort Visor™.  Roll off unit to your right or left side slowly and carefully without turning your head. When you are free from the unit and standing or sitting in an upright position, gently and slowly repeat warm-up routine to acclimate your neck muscles to the weight of your head.
    10. Keep unit near bed or night stand and repeat the above treatment as recommended by your Healthcare Professional. Keep unit out of reach of children at all times.

    Upper Air Cell: Air cell should be centered to expand straight up unless otherwise recommended by your Healthcare Professional. To adjust unoccupied air cell: Fully inflate air cell, forcefully CENTER or tilt completely in the desired direction, HOLD and deflate fully.   • What is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®) and how does it relieve neck & back pain?

    Neck & back pain is a very common problem among the US population, and has traditionally been treated with the use of drugs. However, there are now therapeutic options like the Posture Pump® Disc Hydrator®, which uses Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®) to ease painful stiffness of the neck and back. But what is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression, and how does it alleviate neck and back pain?

    Short term neck and back pain very often resolves on its own. However, chronic pain due to conditions such as sciatica, sciata, disc degeneration, compressed discs and herniated discs, usually require intervention. In these cases, Posture Pump® products provide a unique form of decompression therapy known as EED® for relief of neck & back pain.

    What is Expanding Ellipsoidal Decompression (EED®))?

    EED® was invented and patented by Posture Pump®.  Under EED®, high level joint separation is achieved by expansion of elliptical shaped air cells into the curves of the spine (neck & back).  As EED® occurs, bulging disc material is drawn toward the nucleus pulposus and away from the spinal cord and nerves.  This unique action aligns joints in a curved shape while increasing disc height in a ratio corresponding to the disc’s natural wedged shape. Expansion and contraction of these air cells create alternating hydration and milking of the discs.  Longer expansion periods are employed for posture restoration. It is no longer necessary to forcefully pry the head from the body, pull the posterior joints apart and remove the vital curves of the neck and back.  These spinal curves are essential.
