The Connection between your Jaw and Your Neck – TMJ Neck Pain

Neck Pain is a very usual consequence of TMJ Pain and is closely related to the neck both anatomically and functionally. The jawbone (mandible) is connected to the skull by the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ).

Just behind your jaw are the upper neck facet joints.  So, when your neck moves so does your jaw - and when your jaw moves so does your neck! The muscles that move your jaw are attached via fascial tissue to each other, and to the muscles that move your neck.

Sometimes people have dental work prescribed to treat their jaw when in fact the root of the problem is in their neck. In these situations, the jaw pain returns after time as the cause of the pain is still there. That is - until we resolve the underlying issue: Neck Pain.

Another common cause of TMJ is Forward Head Posture (FHP), in which a person typically sits or stands with their head jutted forward.  Posture is another huge influence on the head and neck. Certain postural changes and imbalances can have adverse effects.  One factor that has become all too common is the fact that most people’s jobs today require hours upon hours of computer work.  Over time, this causes the cervical muscles to contract, which leads to chronic achiness and eventual pain. This unnatural curve in the spine, puts extra pressure on the neck and jaw muscles.

Study: Initial Investigation of the Relation between Extended Computer Use and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: http://www.cda-adc.ca/jcda/vol-74/issue-7/643.pdf

Symptoms can include not just neck pain, but stiffness, numbness in the neck, inability to turn the head left or right, joint sounds during neck movement or arthritis in the neck.  While many TMJ cases can be treated via over-the-counter pain medications and surgery, there’s a surprising new non-surgical easy to use, at home product that can help alleviate your jaw aches and pains. Treat Your TMJ with Posture Pump® Dual Disc Hydrator® Model 1400-D.

Posture Pump® products have been recommended and trusted by health care professionals for over 20 years. I need help. I'm desperate. I've suffered badly w/TMJ pain for decades. Sometimes I can't find a single place on my face that doesn't hurt. I have no more TM cartilage discs. My neck is very tight & I'm glad to hear you say there is a connection. Surprisingly, I've had Drs tell me there is no connection between TMJD & the neck. (Balony!) My cervical, thoracic, & lumbar region sustained injuries & they hurt, but no broken bones. Do you think the posture pump would actually help me?? My Dr would approve it...Shes open to anything at this point, for me. Could you give me a ball park guesstimate of cost?? I won't hold you to it, but need to have some kind of idea. Also, have ANY of your customers been successful getting insurance to pay for it IF their Dr writes a letter to their insurance co's stating it is nessary??? Thank You!!

Could this be used along with a back brace while sitting in a chair during meditation? After a short time, I tend to slump over and my head tilts to the right.

Dear Angela please research Trigeminal neuralgia. Before buying anything. For it sounds like a possible nerve thing and depending on what the machine does it could cause more pain. With possible proper medication for the nerve pain, if that is what is causing your face pain. Then thus may help the neck pain just want you to do things in the right order

I had jaw surgery as a young teen to try to prevent TMJ, but unfortunately I have had at least three episodes of major locking or popping with need of physician. Recently had an MRI done for constant vertigo and the results showed loss of cervical lordosis. After a recent dental filling, I haven't been able to get rid of the jaw pain. It has become so severe it is hard eat due to the pain. My husband and I along with our four kids are moving to Haiti and so I am up to trying anything at this point to get rid of this jaw pain. Do you think it would help?

    Hello
I want to ask wich kind of doctor should i go to check my jaw because anytime i opened it s give a sound of crack it s been for 2 years now
    Thank you so much

Hi Hamza. This sounds like it could possibly be TMJ related. There is no specific test to diagnose TMJ syndrome. A doctor may send the patient to an oral and maxillofacial specialist, an otolaryngologist (also called an ear, nose, and throat doctor or ENT specialist), or a dentist specializing in jaw disorders to confirm the diagnosis. Please give us a call at 1-800-632-5776 if you have any additional questions. Thanks!
