What is Tech Neck?

“Tech Neck” is a common term for neck and upper-back discomfort associated with prolonged screen use and sustained forward-flexed head posture. Looking down at a phone, tablet or other screen moves the head forward relative to the shoulders, increasing the mechanical demands placed on the cervical spine.

WHY HEAD POSITION MATTERS
A widely cited 2014 study by spine surgeon Kenneth K. Hansraj modeled how forces on the cervical spine increase as the head moves forward into flexion.
In a neutral position, the adult head weighs about 10–12 pounds. In the model, the estimated force increased to approximately 27 pounds at 15°, 40 pounds at 30°, 49 pounds at 45°, and 60 pounds at 60° of forward flexion.
